Here is what a student had to say about her experience at our event last weekend ::

“I was on the beach retreat this past weekend and I wanted to let you know that God has come into my heart because of it. I have let things go that have been troubling me and I have let God into my heart to replace of those things. I learned this weekend that I need to stop trying to find fulfillment in other things. I have set an alarm on my phone for everyday to spend time with God and to write in the journal I got from you. I am now striving towards being a “first chair” Christian. Please pray for me that I continue to grow closer with God and that I seek fulfillment in Him. Thank you for ministering to me, it has changed me.”

The Abiding Journey process has changed my life. I entered into this challenging journey of discipleship discovery with a team of co-workers… but have emerged on the other side as a band of brothers, all of whom are committed to making disciples who abide, serve, and multiply.

Chad Hambrick has been a patient but persistent force in teaching and training our team in ways to elevate prayer, develop intimacy with our Father, train leaders, disciple others, impact our culture and develop creative and strategic evangelistic outreach opportunities in our church.

Personally, I feel like Chad and the Abiding Journey helped me to see discipleship not as another appointment or obligation on my calendar but a new way of living. Christ has called me to be His disciple and to make other disciples, and the Abiding Journey has helped realize my life mission and tangible steps and resources to assist me in becoming the disciple-maker God has created me to be.

I will abide in him, serve my church and the world, and multiply myself so that others will find Christ in the Abiding Journey.

This one-year commitment to deep spiritual growth has changed my life, and it can change yours, too.

After launching three churches, and working with numerous church plants, I understand that church starters hit a wall of weariness at the end of the second year. It’s a dangerous time for that leader and he needs to refocus.

By the fall of 2008 I had launched my third church. The ministry field was difficult and by late summer of 2009 I needed help. I began to pray and God brought Chad Hambrick to my church as a consultant with “the abiding journey” in December.

Chad began with weekly meetings in which he listened to me and encouraged me to refocus on abiding, serving and multiplying. He guided me on my spiritual journey and to rethink my philosophy of ministry. He connected people and resources from his network to a new church with limited funds and directed some of our events and activities. I took his advice and his assignments seriously and implemented his suggestions on a weekly basis.

It’s now summer of 2010 and we’re experiencing fruit from the refocus. We’re on track to make disciples that will operate from the overflow and not their reserve. Chad didn’t change my church, he helped me return to my first love while planting a church in a difficult place.

Sincerely,
Terry L. Little
Jersey Community Church

Today while I was out on a hike with my dog I noticed that Buddy, that’s my dog’s name, would run up ahead of me until he couldn’t see me anymore and then he would stop and let me catch up. Sometimes when the trail split he would even choose to go down one path and then look back to see if I was going to choose that path. I always chose the other path just to let him know I was the one leading the way. As we went further along we came across a runner on the trail and Buddy ran as fast as he could back to where I was and hid behind me until all signs of danger were gone.

I started to think to myself, I do the exact same thing with God. I always want to run ahead of Him like I know where I am going. I also find myself choosing my own path only to find out later that God had another path in mind all along. Most of all I wish it did not take a sign of danger to motivate me to draw near to my Father. I love walking with my God as I think my dog loves to hit the trail with me. I just wish Buddy would learn to heal! I bet God would prefer for me to keep in step with Him also.

I went out for a run yesterday to get in my daily workout. I was about half way through my run when a lady walking her dog stopped me to ask about my dog. Before I could start running again she began sharing her hurts and her life journey with me. She had just returned from a visitation service of a man who she had cared for during his last days. She was the primary care giver to an elderly man who had family but they lived in NY. She lived with and cared for him until he had to go to a hospice care center. It seems that she provided much comfort for him because he would not take his pills at the hospice with her not being there. They called her to to let her know about the situation. She wound up sleeping in his room on a pull out bed for 19 days until He passed away.

She shared all that in about 12 minutes and remember I am a stranger just out for a run with my dog.

Wow. People are hurting and in need of a listening ear and a caring heart. I often wonder when things like this happen if God directs these encounters? I know we can never know why things happen but we do know that God is always at work around us and we are to be looking for where He is working and join Him in His work.

Our conversation turned to God when she asked, “God works in mysterious ways doesn’t He?” I will spare you the details but you get the idea of our conversation…

That brings me to this question, Do you believe in God Encounters?

If so will you please share one you have experienced?

My good friend and fellow blogger Trey Bailey, author of The New Normal blog sent me this today and he has given me the freedom to share it with you. I hope it encourages you to see how God is working in His life.

________________

After completing the “Experiencing God” workbook, Chad Hambrick challenged me to write out a prayer to God summarizing my take-away from each unit and then create a concrete goal to assist in living out these take-aways. Here is what I have come up with:

Lord,

I know the truth of the scripture. I know you have called me out and adopted me as a son into your family, a joint heir with Christ. I am assured by the Holy Spirit’s presence in my life that I am redeemed by the blood of Jesus, not by anything that I have done, but only through his sacrifice and grace.

I ask that you assist me with your Spirit to live a life that reflects your holiness and proclaims your glory till you return.
Help me to constantly be aware of your Holy Spirit’s presence, even making a point to consistently seek you first in all things regardless of perceived magnitude.

Action:
[Pray every hour on the hour despite the situation or surrounding.]

Make me uncomfortable for the sake of Christ, so that I will grow in my dependence on the Father. Press me to give sacrificially of my time, my money, and all my stuff so that others may know your great love and providence in their lives.

Action:
[Give sacrificially over and above my tithe to watch God do great things & increase my dependence on him.]
[Secure 3 men to work through Experiencing God together. Begin meeting with them one hour every other week.]

Remind me that a real and honest relationship is a two-way conversation. As I pour my heart out to you, slow me down enough to listen to what you have to say as well. Speak to me. And help me to hear your voice and respond accordingly.

Action:
[Schedule one day a month to get away and be still before the Lord. Completely “unplug” for the day.]

Grow my intimacy in our relationship. Lead me to the cross where I will worship the Holy God, deepen my conversation time with you..let there be few distractions..and speak freely, Lord.

Action:
[Once a month schedule a time to sing and play before the Lord in personal worship. Try to let the Holy Spirit sing through me. Not scheduled songwriting, but spontaneous worship.]

Draw me to your Word. Let me read with a hunger like that of a starving man. Devouring the Word (my daily bread) and placing it above all earthly things. Give me strength to put you first in my day. And Spirit, remind me of the truths and promises all through the day.

Action:
[Start each day with a personal encounter with God. Do not start anything else until I’ve met with God.]
[Mark an “S” on my palm to remind me that I am “surrendered” to Christ for his bidding and his purpose.]

Bring me to a place of trust, knowing that God has my best interest in mind. And help me to grasp the concept that the spiritual is just as real as the physical. But let me trust more in the spiritual than the physical.
Give me a bold confidence, in Christ alone, to attempt God-sized challenges. Let the work of my hands be noticed by man as something that only the supernatural could accomplish. Thus bringing fame to the Holy King and none to me, your servant.

Action:
[Plan something impossible. After a time of unloading my will before the Father, listen and write out an impossible task. Pray, listen, and act to see if God makes the impossible, possible.]

I give up. I surrender all of me, my family, my everything to do your will.

Action:
[Acquire a bedroom suit for the basement. Acquire a washer & dryer. Make that space ready and available for someone to move in with our family, if needed.]

Prompt me to obey and Spirit, convict me when I do not. Remind me that obedience leads to a greater intimacy with the authority.

Action:
[When prompted by the Holy Spirit to act..obey immediately.]

Grant me patience to hear others, knowing that you speak to every believer..not just me, as I’m prone to arrogantly believe.

Action:
[Set up a time once a month to LISTEN to a member of my team/church..no leading..just listening. Ask questions directly related to the Holy Spirit’s work in their life: What is God teaching you through his word? What is the Holy Spirit doing in your life right now?]

Provide me opportunities to love and to show radical grace. We all need a second chance. And my offering of grace could be the open door someone may need to hear the redemptive message of the gospel.

Action:
[Once a quarter, serve in the Celebrate Recovery band on Thursday night.]

Prepare me and empower me to live my faith out loud, for your fame. First with my spouse, then with my children, next in my workplace, and amongst my friends and neighbors..so that the world will see who YOU are in all your goodness and glory. And that the legacy of Christ will continue for generations to come.

Action:
[Spend daily time in prayer with my family utilizing the prayer board.]
[Schedule a couple of events a year where I am serving my community.]
[Blog weekly, and facebook/twitter daily with the intention of living my faith transparently before my friends, family, and community.]

1. What I enjoy I am drawn to consume.
2. If I miss the experience my morning will be “off.”

Now… you tell me. Am I talking about my coffee or my Savior and Lord Jesus Christ?

There are so many ideas about how and why we do what we do as the Church. I am so glad that Jesus set a clear example for us of abiding, serving and multiplying in Father, Holy Spirit and Himself so that we can bear much fruit for the Kingdom.

Here are some great points I ran across today and I wanted share them with you:

How did Jesus model ministry for us?

(REMEMBER HE DID ALL OF THIS WITH A FOUNDATION OF PRAYER AND IN UNITY WITH THE FATHER AND SPIRIT.)

   1. He led them to salvation. Jesus prayed, “For you granted him authority over all men that he might give eternal life to all those you have given to him.” This should be obvious. Discipleship begins with evangelism. Of course, we want to disciple people who are already Christians. But remember, Jesus started with pagans. We’ve got to win people to Christ before we can train them. The spiritual birth always precedes spiritual growth.

   2. He taught them the Word. Jesus taught his disciples the Word of God. There is no spiritual growth that’s not based on God’s Holy Scripture. In verse eight Jesus prays, “For I gave them the words that you gave me and they accepted them.” And in verse 14 he says, “I have given them your word.” The Word of God is the foundation for all discipleship. Want people to grow spiritually and be fruitful? Get them in the Word every day. Just listening to your sermons – no matter how good they are – won’t help your people be as fruitful as getting them into the Word for themselves.

   3. He prayed for them. To see your people grow spiritually, you need to pray for them. That’s part of pastoring. You don’t just pray for your sermons or yourself; you pray for your people as well. Jesus said, “I pray for them. I’m not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours” (John 17:9). We need to pray with them and pray for them. Paul followed this example of Christ as well. In fact, he starts almost every letter in the New Testament he wrote with a prayer for the church.

   4. He checked up on them. Jesus says, “While I was with them…” You can’t disciple somebody that you’re not with. Pastor, you’ve got to be with your people if you want them to grow spiritually. You’re not going to be able to personally check up and mentor everyone. But somehow your church needs a system for coaching in your church. You need small group leaders or others who will follow up on your people. Jesus protected his disciples from false teaching and kept them from backsliding. He guarded them. At the end of his ministry on earth, he says I haven’t lost a single one of them – except Judas to fulfill Scripture. If you want your people to grow, you need some sort of accountability in your ministry.

   5. He sent them on mission. Then Jesus says, “As you sent me into the world I have sent them into the world.” Who do you think are the most mature people at our church? The thousands of people who’ve gone overseas on mission. It changes them. When they come back, they’re not thinking about diamond-crusted tennis bracelets anymore. Once you’ve served around the world, it changes your value system. You care more about people overseas, and you care about people in your own community, too. These short-term missionaries have come back and loved the poor, ministered to the addicts, and battled the sex trade right here in Orange County. That’s maturity.

The goal of discipleship in any church must be ministry and mission. Maturity is never an end in itself. In fact, you can’t be mature until you’re ministering and living on mission. Jesus said “I didn’t come to be served. I came to serve and to give my life as a ransom.” The words give and serve define the Christian life. You want your people to be like Christ? Teach them to give and serve.

   6. He expected reproduction. We know he expected reproduction because in verse 20 of this priestly prayer he says, “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message.” He not only sent the disciples out into the world, but he implied that he’s expecting reproduction. Did it work? Obviously. There are nearly two billion people who claim the name of Christ around the world.

   7. He focused on character. Jesus didn’t simply expand the knowledge, perspective, skills, or conviction of the disciples. He focused on their character. Spiritual maturity is about character and conduct – not just content. We don’t want to just fill up people’s minds with facts and figures. Paul says, “I want to present every man perfect in Christ.” If, in the final analysis, the people I’m training aren’t more like Jesus after we’ve worked together, I’ve missed the point.

   8. He loved them. Jesus said, “You sent me and I have loved them as you have loved me.” This is so typical of Jesus. All that Jesus did for his disciples was in a spirit of love. You must love those you train. If you don’t love them, it doesn’t count. If you don’t have a sincere abiding love for the people in your church, then do you know what discipleship is? It’s manipulation. You’re just manipulating them toward a goal.

Have we done it well?

Here is one pastor’s take on what he would do differently if given the chance.

1. I would spend more time in the Word and in prayer. I would follow the biblical pattern of the church leaders in Acts 6:4: “But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the preaching ministry.”

2. I would give my family more time. No one remembers the church committee meetings I missed. My family still remembers those times I was too busy for them.

3. I would spend more time sharing my faith. Paul told the young pastor Timothy to do the work of an evangelist (2 Timothy 4:5). Those words apply to all pastors today.

4. I would love the community where I lived more. I would try to live more incarnationally. I would prayerfully seek to see how I could serve the community rather than see it as a population pool of prospects for my church.

5. I would lead the church to focus more on the nations. I would lead in helping our church grasp that missions is more than just an annual offering.

6. I would focus on critics less. Most church members have no idea how many criticisms and “suggestions” a pastor gets each week. It can be overwhelming and distracting. Though I would be willing to listen, I would not obsess about every negative comment that was made about me.

7. I would accept the reality that I can’t be omnipresent. So many people and groups want the presence of the pastor. Saying “no” can be difficult, but it can free the pastor to focus on some of the priorities noted above.
Jesus said, “Follow me and I will make you fishers of Men.”

The question I am asking myself today is, am I truly following Christ and has He made me a fisher of men?

Here are some additional questions I choose to ask myself on a regular basis ::

1. How have you promoted a passionate environment of prayer in your home,
among your staff, and throughout the church body during the past month?

2. What are you currently doing to deepen your personal walk with God in order to
create intimacy in your relationship with Christ?

3. How have you personally invested into your leaders during the past month in
order to multiply your ministry effectiveness?

4. Who do you meet with on a regular basis to hold you accountable and to
encourage you to become everything God has created you to be? Who do you
meet with on a regular basis to pour / invest your life into?

5. Describe how, in the past month, you have engaged unchurched people, in their
environment, in order to penetrate their culture and reach them with the love of
Christ?

6. What have you done in the past month to create an environment that was
conducive for non-Christian people to come into contact with Jesus Christ?

7. What have you done in the past month to keep Jesus Christ as the central focus of
your life and ministry?
